Positioned on the shores of a glacial lake at the end of the last ice-age, legend has it that Pickering garnered its name in 270 BC when King Peredurus lost his ring and accused a young woman of stealing it. However, later in the day, when he sat down to dinner, the ring was discovered in the belly of a pike that he was about to consume. Hence, the town became known as ‘Pike-ring’ with the legend evidenced in the coat-of-arms to this day.
